Dawid Scumwalski Another excellent offering from the City of Worms. Gaggle is filled with industrial loops, warbled tape weirdness, dark, psychedelic atmosphere; every sound is either delayed or stretched beyond belief. There is some blatant tape manipulation and field recordings in the background, but the entire collage is so complex that it is difficult to discern between the individual sounds.

about

Gaggle is City of Worms' third release.

To say something about the absolute accuracy of our indicated release dates... we are uncertain. However, we are certain of the order in which the recordings were released. Our session dates were documented and corroborate. Spotify requires that a release date is indicated, so we decided to place release within a month of the session date. This is rather ballpark, but otherwise we would simply indicate the year of release, which is arguably an even bigger ballpark. Anyway...

Like our first two releases, Gaggle does not adhere to any particular guiding concept. We individually collected sounds via media and IRL then arrived for the session, materials on tape. The session was recorded as improvised and most if not all was kept and released, except of course for the instances where the 45 minute side of a cassette tape expended unnoticed.

As you have probably observed, certain themes have persisted throughout our first three releases. Such was our zeitgeist and our own focus tendencies in young adulthood. This was an era of Ronald Reagan, covert operations, the rise of media churches, the beginnings of cable television and the final years of that cold war. A&E, The History Channel, CNN and others delivered to our boxes the conflict and murderous humanity of the 20th century. This too became our material.

Our session recording method was of what we could afford and consisted of handheld cassette tape recorders with their onboard microphones. To say the least, LoFi and unwanted distortion was the result.

CITY OF WORMS Colorado Springs, Colorado

City Of Worms formed in late Fall of 1986. The founding members were Jeph Jerman, Steve Beckner and George Ericson. Methods were improvised regurgitations of our environment (both mediated and IRL)... press record, review, repeat. Tools included SK-1 samplers, handheld cassette decks, pedal effects, guitar amps and minimal technical expertise. Forward 3 years and over 20 releases. ... more
