Dawid Scumwalski This self-titled release from the great City of Worms feels much louder and noisier than their previous efforts. Still, it is made using a plethora of source sounds, and the ones I can discern include tapes, field recordings, electro-acoustics, and some loops played back with a sampler(?). Difficult to tell, but it's very well worth your time. If you have never heard of City of Worms, you're in for a real fucking treat.

about

This is City Of Worms' second recorded session and first release.

Our basic methodology for this session was without any particular guiding concept. We each gathered sounds that interested us, materials sonically interesting and/or of individual predilections and advocacies, and arrived to freely improvise. We hit record and played, went upstairs to break and review, then back to the basement to do it again. This would go on throughout the night. Everything was single take and most everything was kept.

The session recording is low-fi and of high-mid tonal characteristic. I seem to recall an AIWA handheld stereo cassette recorder with an onboard stereo mic. Like everything, it was what we could afford, but lent speed to production and immediacy to characteristic. The same qualities were inherent to the materials gathered and performed with.

This digital release contains all materials available on the original C90 cassette release. In addition, this contains materials cut due to the time limitations of the original release media. These additional materials are included in the sequence in which they were recorded and reflect the session master. Slight restoration, repair and mastering processes have been applied to reduce obscuring artifact and improve tonal balance. I believe this is a better reflection of the performance happening in the room.

CITY OF WORMS Colorado Springs, Colorado

City Of Worms formed in late Fall of 1986. The founding members were Jeph Jerman, Steve Beckner and George Ericson. Methods were improvised regurgitations of our environment (both mediated and IRL)... press record, review, repeat. Tools included SK-1 samplers, handheld cassette decks, pedal effects, guitar amps and minimal technical expertise. Forward 3 years and over 20 releases. ... more
